Level 2 Award in
Timber Studies

Overview

A product-focused course full of accessible content, ideal for those who are new to the timber industry or looking for a deeper understanding of the products they sell.

The Level 2 Award provides a solid foundation of understanding of wood science principles, and relates these to the everyday experience of timber and timber-based panel products.

Format

4x one-day tutorials including workbook, plus access to tutors in between tutorials. A short exam concludes the course.

Level 4 Certificate in
Wood Science &
Timber Technology

Overview

Providing solid, in-depth knowledge on wood as a material and timber-based panel products, this is ideal follow-on training from our Level 2 course; but is equally suitable as a standalone qualification for those in more senior roles within the timber industry, or with good existing knowledge of the material.

Those who complete the course can expect to have a much better grasp of wood science which will enable them to solve problems related to specification and use.

Successful candidates will be eligible for Membership of the IOM3 at “Technician” level (TIMMM).

Format

4 x one-day tutorials, a complimentary copy of ‘The Sustainable Use of Wood in Construction’ by Jim Coulson with Iain Thew, plus access to tutors in between tutorials. Revision day prior to the exam, which comprises 2 x exam papers of short-format and essay-format questions.

Level 4 Certificate in
Timber Technology for the
Built Environment

Overview

Providing the same solid, in-depth wood science as our established Level 4 course, the new Timber Technology for the Built Environment course focuses on how a sound grasp of wood science principles can assist those in the design, specification, renovation and inspection of new and heritage buildings.

With extra content on wood preservation, sustainability and hardwood identification, this course provides fascinating practical insight into timber technology, especially for those outside of the timber trade itself.

Successful candidates will be eligible for Membership of the IOM3 at “Technician” level (TIMMM).

Format

4x one-day tutorials, a complimentary copy of ‘The Sustainable Use of Wood in Construction’ by Jim Coulson with Iain Thew, plus access to tutors in between tutorials. Revision day prior to the exam, which comprises 2x exam papers of short-format and essay-format questions.

Level 6 Diploma in
Advanced Wood Science

Overview

Delegates will study advanced wood science, including wood anatomy, hardwood species identification, strength properties and loading characteristics, understanding preservatives and treatment chemicals, and properties of wood in reaction to fire.

Qualifications at this level are accepted by the IOM3 to be eligible for membership at “Associate” level (AIMMM).

The Level 6 Diploma in Advanced Wood Science is designed to be a higher level qualification for the individual concerned, intended to lead to their development and knowledge as a wood scientist. It is unique to Woodexperts and is the only qualification at this level available outside of mainstream education providers. As such, timber businesses may find it useful to have a Masters level-qualified member of staff on their team.

Format

Similar to the Level 4 Certificate Course, it comprises 4 tutorials plus revision day and exam. Signifcant private study is required.
